The performance was held in the Esplanade Concert Theatre. Being it my first time there for such a Big event, I was impressed by almost everything! =D But sadly, no picture taking allowed in the Esplanade theatre. So not much of pictures to show. Except for those that I got from the program booklet and google. Fianlly got to see some 'light' in working in a non-profit organisation as a temp staff.
Invited my parents with me to watch the performance with me. The theatre was very big with 4 levels. Got the seat at the 4th level which didn't had the best view, but nevertheless got to catch every action and scence in the dance.
The performance showed case some of their heritage and culture in the Philippines. Both modern and tribal. As you can see from the picture above, their dressings and culture doesn't really look asian... But is mixed due to the spanish influence in their country during the days of colonial rule.
For the dance dressing usually have lots of lace and their music are those played on a banjor (not sure of the spelling) or ukelele.. And their dance taps also had a lot of rhythms done by both their feet and "clapping" instrument (the one with 2 circle tied to each other with a string that makes the "clap-clap" sound when you close it).
They also showed-case their culture during wedding ceremonies, welcoming the invited guest and accepting well wishes from friends. It included their famous bamboo play cum dance.
Their tribal culture however, was the unique one that remained unchanged, untouched and unique through the colonial rule. The people had their own unique simple music instruments from nature. With sounds mostly made from their voices.
Must say that the Byanihan Dance troops put up a really good show. Showing the contrast of both the modern and tribal culture in their country. It was a good mix and was very entertaining.
